2015

Crack Propagation and Damage Investigation of Cable-Stayed Pylon

After 10 years in service, a cable-stayed bridge showed visible cracking near the anchorage zone of its pylon. I led the field investigation of crack identification, pattern, and propagation, supported by 2D and 3D nonlinear finite element analysis of the cracked reinforced concrete. Geometry, reinforcement, and prestressing were modeled from as-built drawings, and the model was calibrated against global nonlinear construction-stage analysis and field load testing. The analysis traced the cracking to differential relaxation of cable forces acting on the pylon wall, and repair drawings were produced for the owner.

2014

Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis of Rama VIII Cable-Stayed Bridge for Health Monitoring

The Rama VIII Bridge crosses the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok with an asymmetrical inverted-Y pylon and an 84-cable stay arrangement over a 300 m main span. After nearly ten years in service, a full 3D FE model was built and calibrated using as-built drawings, field-inspected damage, measured natural periods and mode shapes from ambient/controlled vibration testing, and cable forces adjusted via nonlinear optimization. The calibrated model was then used for nonlinear time-history analysis against ground motions scaled to Thailand's seismic hazard map (มยผ. 1302) and the AASHTO seismic response spectrum at 0.1g.

2009

Investigation of the Collapse of a Parking Structure, Tropicana Casino and Resort

On October 30, 2003, several floors of a parking structure under construction at the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey collapsed. As part of the litigation, large nonlinear finite element analyses had been conducted by Construction Technologies Laboratory (CTL) using DIANA. At the request of a law firm representing one of the defendants, I worked with Prof. Daniel Kuchma to complete an independent review of the DIANA analyses and additional analyses using other programs, assessing whether the completed analyses could capture the force distribution and expected failure mode in the region of collapse.

Assessment of Seismic Performance of 32-Storey Residential Buildings and Parking Structure

A residential development of three connected buildings — 32-storey "L"- and "T"-shaped towers and a 5-storey parking structure — required seismic performance assessment given the continuity and irregularity between the towers. Full 3D dynamic finite element analyses were conducted using a commercial software package, and the results were post-processed to assess seismic performance and identify structural members requiring redesign to prevent undesirable damage and failure.
