Crack Propagation and Damage Investigation of Cable Stayed Pylon

After 10 years opening to normal traffic, the cable stayed bridge is subjected to visible cracks near the anchorage zone of pylon. The author is involved the field investigation of crack identification, pattern, and propagation. The visual inspection and the advance nonlinear finite element analysis are performed to find out the causes for the cracks.

The 2D and 3D Finite Element Analysis considering nonlinear mechanics of cracked reinforced concrete is performed. The accurate geometry, dimension, reinforcement, including prestressing bars are included in the model based on the as-built drawings. The model is calibrated by using the global nonlinear construction stage analysis of the bridge with the field load test. The result of crack propagation reviews the causes of the damage relating to the different relaxation of cable forces acting on the pylon wall. The repair of the structure is suggested and produced as the drawing for the owner.
